Introduction
The “Math-ter Piece” project where students use joint mathematical functions to construct an image of their choice. Using a free online graphing software called Desmos, students input symbolic functions and instantly observe the graphed representation. Student develop conceptual understanding by editing their functions, such as altering the domain or range, and understanding how that influences the function.

The project can be modified to account for different levels, such as only using linear functions for beginning algebra students. Every time when a student successfully placed the function to the intended position, they received the reassurance the internal reward of accomplishment.
This is an example of a project that foregrounds mathematical modeling, but provides rich opportunities for students to engage in all math practices in service of developing understanding of mathematical functions.
Below you will find videos explaining the design of the task, examples of students and teachers reflecting on the task, and how the math practices were evident in the task's design.
